Illinois CDL Practice Exam – Practice Test, Prep & Questions

The three main classes of CDL licenses in Illinois are Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each class allows the driver to operate different types of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).

Class A licenses are required for drivers who operate combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, which includes a towed vehicle over 10,000 pounds. This class is essential for those who drive large trucks, such as tractor-trailers and freight haulers.

Class B licenses are designated for drivers of single vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. This includes buses and straight trucks, permitting operators to haul heavier loads without the complexity of towing large trailers.

Class C licenses cover smaller vehicles that may transport hazardous materials or carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver. It requires specific knowledge and skills related to operating these vehicles safely.

Considering these descriptions, the correct grouping of Class A, Class B, and Class C provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the licensure structure for commercial drivers in Illinois, enabling the safe and regulated movement of goods and passengers on the road.
